Was it really that long ago? Upper Darby High Class of 1970 celebrates 55th Reunion

I can’t believe it was 55 years ago that I walked off the Tower Theater with a diploma in hand. Upper Darby High School was a big school. I didn't feel ready to conquer the world when I left.
When you go to a big high school, it's different from small graduating classes where you know your classmates and their siblings. In a large school, you can feel lost not only when going to class and finding your locker, but also when trying to meet new friends. I didn't attend one of the elementary schools in Upper Darby, which seemed to have a common thread similar to those found in Catholic parishes. People knew each other, and many close friendships were born there.
Moving while in junior high to Drexel Hill Middle School was quite an experience. I missed my school in Philly for no other reason than the familiarity of it all, the friends I made, and shared classes. It was a challenge.
I found friends with whom I clicked. I wanted to be a writer. I was inspired by my creative writing classes and writing pieces for the Acorn. My most famous article featured the Beatles proclaiming that Paul was not dead. Puff piece for sure. But it was timely. Those published moments led to a career in journalism.
The Pep Club was a joy to be a part of. I still bleed purple and gold when I hear about the teams at Upper Darby, especially the Thanksgiving football game between Haverford and Upper Darby. I covered the Royals many times throughout my career and, yes, I was rooting for our Royals in any game they played.
I remember one of the last football games played during high school. We did not win! It was freezing outside, but I couldn't leave until the end. I still had hope. This carries over to the Phillies and the Eagles- never say never.
Many memories, the creaking floor in the Old Building, art classes, English, and the dreaded gym classes. The Drill team, which I tried out for but never made the team. Loved those boots with the tassels.
So here we are at the 55th reunion. If you are wondering whether you should go, do.
